Contraction Timer

Last updated: 23 August 2026

What a timer is for

A contraction timer can help families record start times, duration and spacing so they can describe what is happening more clearly when speaking to a maternity unit or care team.

The timer is practical support. It is not emergency triage and should not replace local birth guidance.

Partner support during timing

  • Handle the timer so the mother does not have to manage every detail.
  • Keep water, transport, phone charger and hospital details ready.
  • Write down care team instructions.
  • Avoid pressure or constant questioning between contractions.

Care-team note

Contact a maternity unit, midwife, obstetrician or emergency service if symptoms, bleeding, waters, pain, movement changes or any other concern feels urgent.
